Agnes CHRISTMAS was born circa 1718 in Hanover County, Virginia. She married James WHITLOCK in the year 1734 in Albemarle County, Virginia. They are my direct ancestors.

Agnes was the daughter of Thomas Christmas who was born in 1697 in Stafford Co. VA. He died circa 1768 at St. Martins Parish in Hanover Co. VA. The following are excerpts from a transcription of his Last Will and Testament:

Will of THOMAS CHRISTMAS:

Will: Thomas Christmas of St. Martins Parish, Hanover Co., VA. 29, Dec. 1768. Recorded Hanover Co., VA Sep 7, 1769. Attested copy records Bute Co., NC, Feb. court 1770......."Item: I give and bequeath unto my six grandchildren , Charles Whitlock, James Whitlock, Mary Jones, Anne Austine, Thomas Whitlock and Nathaniel Whitlock, to them and to their heirs, assigns forever ten pounds current money each......"

A copy of the above Will has been given to Hanover C..H. VA. State library and National DAR Library, Washington, D.C.

Prior to English colonization what is today Hanover County was hunting ground for the Pamunkey and Chickahominy Indians. In the late 17th century it was settled by plantation owners and others involved in the tobacco related economy. At that time it was part of New Kent County. Hanover County was officially formed on November 26, 1720 from the area of New Kent County called St. Paul's Parish. It was named for King George I of England, who was Elector of Hannover in Germany when he came to the throne. Two early port towns on the Pamunkey River were Hanovertown and Newcastle. Both were mercantile villages from which tobacco was shipped to England. Neither exists today.
